sandmansister: (Tick - Thinks)

So... I'm still pondering my next tattoo. I know what I want it to say, but I'm still trying to figure out the execution. I have some ideas, of course, but wanted to check in with the VURD to get other opinions and/or troubleshoot things that may not have occurred to me.

I want it to say Be present for everything. My initial feeling was that I didn't want it in English, but I'm torn as to what language would be appropriate. Now I'm questioning that initial gut reaction. If the point is for me to have a message/reminder to myself, then what's wrong with one's mother tongue?

The tat will happen soon, one way or the other. Just trying to figure out what form of expression will make me happiest in the long run.

Ultimately, the language is entirely up to you, and I don't think one option is better than another, really. Chinese characters may soon appear to be an outdated trend for tattoos, so there's that to consider. Another angle to think about: As the years go by and the tat begins to soften and/or bleed a bit (ink-bleed, that is), something written in a well-known language will obviously appear "bled." If you go with something that looks more like a design to the casual observer (Tolkein, for example), years down the road, a bled tattoo in that will look less like an old phrase, and more like a design that simply softened.

I am personally squeamish about getting any tattoo done in a language I'm not fluent in. Because I am afraid - nay, paranoid - of finding myself in this type of scenario:

Plus, I like the sentiment enough that I'd want it to be in English. But, if you dig the mystery, and don't want it to be as obvious (and have the added bonus of being able to make up alternative translations for it to the muggles who might ask), find somebody you really trust and whip that bad boy out in whatever language you want! It will be awesome no matter what.
