sandmansister: (Dr. Horrible commentary - Hug/bitches!)
Some of you may remember the Declaring My Intention post, or the Happy-Making Challenge/That Which Does Not Suck meme. These were originated by [livejournal.com profile] apocalypticbob. I remind you because these things show the nature of her heart and spirit.

She has found herself in a spot due to issues with her automobile. [livejournal.com profile] rowangolightly is bringing this online community together to see what we can do to help. More than 30 people from Kansas City, Oklahoma, and DFW have contributed this awesome list of stuff to raise the needed funds to help out.

Please check out the goods. There are some unique and wonderful things for sale. Many hand-crafted bits of goodness, some pamper yourself stuffus, costume-y bits, oddities and the like. If you're like far too many I know who are currently un- or under- employed, please repost instead. Publicity far and wide will make this venture an even bigger success. And people will end up with cool swag in the process. FTW!

Bidding is open until Thursday, August 20th at 1:00pm CST.

If you like what you've seen and wish to bid on an item, go here. This filter also contains several additions not available that the time of the original post. Each item is listed separately, with a pic, full description, and bidding rules.

I am just a big enough schmoob to believe in the power of community, and what we can achieve if we all just do a little bit. That's why I have quotes like this adorning the sidebar of my journal:
"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give."
~ Sir Winston Churchill

"It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act."
~ The Dalai Lama

"It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can do only a little. Do what you can."
~ Sydney Smith

"We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results."
~ Herman Melville

"We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening our own."
~ Ben Sweetland

So, my online tribe, go forth and do that voodoo that you do so well!

From this original post by my beloved [livejournal.com profile] cluegirl...

"I've got a friend unexpectedly in hospital. This friend was laid off six months ago, and has had a regular series of financial and emotional blows that have rocked her on her arse at regular intervals since then. She is not in a position just now to address the financial issues that are demanding address, not only because she is strapped, but also because she is in hospital for an undetermined amount of time, and CANNOT do it. She was beyond strapped when she went in, and as we all know, being in hospital does not come with a paycheque. She needs help, and the people who are helping her need help in order to continue.

That's where You, my dear flist, come in.

I've seen other tarologists do events similar to this, and so I'm narfing their idea, and spinning it to some good end, I hope.
Here's the deal:
You comment with one question.
I answer your comment with one tarot card.
You donate one dollar -- or more if you can manage it, -- to the Spider fund.

Every penny I drum up will go to Femme and Dragon, who are the Feet-On-The-Ground for Spider right now, and through them, to keeping Spider's apartment under lease, her cats fed, and her utilities functioning until she's released.

So please drop a comment, a question, and a dollar if you can. And then shill this post to anyone and everyone whom you think might be able or willing to help out. Because the dollars in the tamborine do add up, take it from an old busker, and sometimes they can make the difference between a quick turkey leg, and doing the next show hungry."

So I beseech you, dear FList, to click the link above. Ask your question. Give one of dollars. I get that for some folks that really is the difference between making it to the next paycheck or not, but if you can give up a latte for one day, or bring a sandwich instead of eating out... well, just think about it, would ya? 'Cuz I really do believe that if we each do a little, it adds up to a lot (and you know how I love to be right). ;-)

If you cannot donate, please pass this on. The power of our community is mighty.

As shared by [livejournal.com profile] rowangolightly... this kid is pretty amazing. Check out the video clip, then read his story.

I know there are plenty of comic geek folks on this flist, and I'm betting at least a couple are connected. Artists? Where are ya? Anyone willing to help make a dream come true? I'm betting it would be the project of a lifetime.

Even if you just need an attitude adjustment... well, yeah. Just go read.

... and lookie here, I've even provided handy links (and yes, these people are real friends of mine, I know and trust them implicitly so there's no scammage going on):

First, from my wonderful [livejournal.com profile] nostradomnatrix (who has allowed me to be the third twin):
Donations for Megan's Sister through the following PayPal account:

mickey_thorpe AT yahoo DOT com

$5? Great.

$10? Yes, poppy, YES!

$15? $20? Your name will be exalted from the heavens... or growled from the depths of the hoary netherworlds; whatever your bag, baby.

The benefit show for Juli left Megan, Budros and crew in the hole. Attendance was not good enough for them to break even. Local support was minimal, and now we're pulling out the big guns.

Your money will be going to help Juli keep her head above water. She's had her surgery, which was a nightmare story in itself, and now she's facing months and months of medical treatment and living expenses.

It's a great cause, and it's not even because it's the holidays. We're collecting for just the basics, and maybe some medical treatment if we're lucky.

Thanks for your time! :)

And if you could post this far and wide (or even just link to it), Juli would really appreciate it. And so would I.

Have no cash? Have no fear...
All you need here is a kind heart. [livejournal.com profile] muse_of_chaos made it easy-peasy. Just some words, a spare few moments of thought... it costs nothing and for the return? Priceless. Kind of like [livejournal.com profile] muse_of_chaos.

See, don't you feel better? Then PASS IT ON, monkey! What are you waiting for?!!?

I received this email from my birth mother on behalf of my Aunt Anne. I am sorry I will never get to meet her; she sounds like a feisty lady and I respect her willingness to fight a worthy cause. I am sad and angry that this cover-up has taken part of my heritage from me. Please take a moment to listen to her story.

Here's the preface from my birth mom:

In this day of prayer wheels to support our troops, I ask for your support and prayers for the troops that have been our country's fighting force for so many years. Attached is a letter written by my dear sister who died on February 22, 2006 due to chemical poisoning from the water supply at the Marine Corps base where she was stationed with her husband and family. I ask you - please - take a few minutes to read her letter and pass it on. Read more... )
