Of course it's on the morning when I get involved in a project until 4am that my father calls with some random question at 10am. Actually, that's not the scariest part. The curmudgeon was giddy. He sang to me.

SleepyMe: Hello?

WeirdDad: [sings to the tune of "Happy Birthday"] Good morning to you; Good morning to you; Good morning dear Amy, good morning to you!

ConfusedMe: Hey Dad, what's up?

WeirdDad: [continues singing random made-up "wake up" song]

LaughingMe: You're so weird. So... what do you need?

StillWeirdDad: [Makes up yet another song]

PerplexedMe: Seriously, Dad, what's going on?

FeignsHurtDad: Can't I just call to wish you good morning?

*sigh*

*wonders what Mom put in Mr. Bottom Line's Cheerios this morning*

He actually wanted to know if I had the speakers for the old computer down here. (I do. Now I have to give up the Harman/Kardons and use my crappy old ones again. Boo.)

Yeesh.

Today's piece is about creating rituals to keep you grounded, as they're a way to build a personal culture and help you stay in the here-and-now.

It defines ritual very broadly and isn't necessarily spiritually based... using special flatware at certain dinner celebrations, for instance. I find the ideas in this brief piece interesting because it demystifies ritual while simultaneously underscoring the importance to the human psyche.
