The Dallas Derby Devils league kick-off party was a rousing success! No spillage or breakage, no police called, and all vomiting occurred in the proper receptacles. Actually managed to sleep from about 3:30am to 9ish. Wasn't planning to make practice, but most of the mess was cleaned up and I wasn't hung over. Plus, we had several Rollergirls from Austin visiting (including 8 Track, Trouble, White Lightning, Sparkle Plenty and DevilGrrl) and I wanted to learn from them as much as possible.

Was sorry I had to miss [livejournal.com profile] cailetambraii and [livejournal.com profile] heronmarkblade's engagement party... but got a frantic call from the league co-director, who was engaged in pre-party prep (embroidering shirts for the Executive Board members). She needed other Dallas-based Board Members to hook up with some new girls downtown... met at least 5 new skaters and brought 2 more on board - we are legion!

Other happy-making happenings:

* Hearing from one of our strongest skaters how much I've improved over the last month

* Said skater telling me she'd take me on her team right now and feel comfortable going up against existing leagues

* Having Delicious Cakes as a league sponsor, 'cuz they donated a Devil's Food cake with chocolate liqueur and cream cheese frosting and our logo... *drools* (Yeah, [livejournal.com profile] nostradomnatrix, they do Bundt cakes too - call the plumber!)

* Getting mistaken for a Satan's Cheerleader

* Hearing the phrases, "I'm gonna watch you to figure out how to dance to this stuff!" and "You're the only fun person left!"

I can't wait to purchase my own skates. The crappy rentals are getting on my nerves. There's no arch support and ankle support is minimal. And for two weeks I've gone without toe stops. Blech. Perhaps it will be a derby birthday for me this year.

On the flip side, attended Cecil Ethridge's funeral Friday afternoon. It was wonderful to hear from people who knew and loved him. The church was packed to the rafters. Even the lobby was filled with chairs to accommodate everyone who wanted to pay tribute and lend support. What a marvelous testament to a life well lived.

I sat next to [livejournal.com profile] seahawk_capt. His nearness was such a comfort. At one point I felt his tentative hand on my back. As I relaxed into the contact, he patted my shoulder and stroked my hair. Small gestures, but imminently soothing. I felt safe. What a rare and precious thing. Thank you, my friend. You are a treasure.

So... didn't go to bed until after 4am Saturday morning and 3:30am this morning... didn't get back from practice until after 3pm today, whereupon [livejournal.com profile] meatpie & I finished the last bit of tear-down and clean-up. Then I napped on the couch. As I learned from watching The Tick, "An object at rest cannot be stopped!" Aaaah, inertia.

The coming week should prove busy. I go play "Crack Yer Bones" with Dr. Steve tommorrow, Drinking and Grief Decompression with [livejournal.com profile] dancewench on Tuesday, TV Night Wednesday, skate practice Thursday and at 5am Friday Bunny, BadgerGrrl, [livejournal.com profile] dancewench and I take off for our Annual Aquarian Birthday Babes Big Easy road trip. (I know, Bunny is a Pisces, but we made her an honorary Aquarian last year.) I think we have a new addition this year - last I heard, [livejournal.com profile] honeymom was joining us too. w00t!

With that, it's nearly time for Guilty Pleasures Night - Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal. (Will watch Carnivále tomorrow night, cuz DAYummmm. It's some Clancy Brown fabulous.) So, la. I'm off. And I'm going.
