Derby Saturday Night
Feb. 22nd, 2005 04:05 pmThings went *so* well. I am beyond bummed that I missed Duran Duran *snifflesobsigh* but things really paid off. We had more than 10 girls show up all clad in Devil red and black. Lots of us even had t-shirts or tank tops with our skater names and numbers, so we really looked the part! (Will share pictures as I get them.)
We were given an info booth at the front door. Handed out lots of flyers for our benefit concert (April 2nd at the Doublewide in Deep Ellum!) and recruited some too. In fact, two ladies we met showed up at practice the next day!
Between bands (Alcohollica, a Metallica tribute band, and Back in Black, the AC/DC equivalent), we were introduced as an answer to the demise of hockey: skating with all the violence! Plus we're better in lots of ways 'cuz derby involves hot chicks in costumes of wee. The morning guy (who also announces the Dallas Mavericks) introduced each girl and let her skate a lap on the dance floor. The crowd seemed really receptive... and I've discovered that as a derby girl I get *way* more free drinks than I did wenching! Just sayin.
Of course the lure of the mechanical bull was more than we could bear. Hollywood, known here as
ange1ofdreams, hopped on first, followed by Wicked Bitch of the West. The rest of us wanted in on the action but had no desire to mount the bull... so when Wicked hopped off we piled on top of her and girly-fought. Laughed so hard we could barely function.
And that's when it happened.
Apparently the bull operator (what the frell do you call those guys, anyway?) thought it would be funny to bring the mechanical beast into the action, prodding me in the behind with a horn. I flipped over quickly, quite alarmed... like ya do.
At practice Sunday I mused aloud, "I didn't fall, so why is my knee tender like I'm bruised?" Hollywood figured it out. "It was that damn bull!" Nearly fell over... she was right! I blame the livestock!
Best of all, we got a new sponsor! He met me Friday night and took home a sponsorship package. Called the next day to sign on. The radio station also said they'd put us on the air and write PSAs to promote any and all of our appearances. This, as they say, could be the start of a beautiful frienship! \m/
