Welcome to the 2006 Holiday Edition of Getting to Know Your Friends, as emailed to me by
dancewench! You know the drill. Copy and paste, changing my answers to your answers.
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? I like both. There's a romance to hot chocolate(plus it's great with Bailey's or Frangelico). Angie's egg nog has spoiled me for life, though. Can't do the store bought stuff anymore!
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Ditto Jack: tree = wrapped, stocking = unwrapped
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? I like plain white on the tree and fat, old school bulbs outside, though if they're wound in garland I will go with plain lights. Can't do twinkles (especially when they're set on different speeds). Harf!
4. Do you hang mistletoe? Nope. Can't find any when I'm thinking of it, and don't have scissors & a step ladder when I see it! Every year, I keep thinking, "Gotta stash those in the car in case there's a missed mistletoe opportunity!" So far I have failed my save.
5. When do you put up your decorations? Whenever I get to it. I am for after Thanksgiving but lately it's quite a bit after.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? We do the traditional roast beast & Yorkshire pudding. And for breakfast Mom always makes Danish Puff (though because of her heritage it's been renamed Finnish Flat). Our Canuck next door neighbor also shared a tradition of Toutiere (French Canadian pork pie) for Christmas brunch; later got my birth mom's family recipe and it is BEYOND tasty. (Yes, I am genetically incapable of picking just one favorite on any food-related question.) ;-)
7. Favorite Christmas memory as a child: Sitting on Santa's lap when I was 5 or 6. HE knew everything about me... he knew I wanted a white kitten, he knew my sister's name, our street and the color of my room. It was our next door neighbor. He even stopped by on Christmas Eve! It was magical.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I have no idea. Clearly, it wasn't that big a trauma in retrospect.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We used to do that pretty consistently. Mom made homemade clam chowder (I see you drooling,
buffalobills!) and we'd open a gift before Midnight Mass. Now it depends on everyone's mood.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Last year was the first time I had room for my very own tree (OK, one larger than table top size). I was lucky to manage to assemble the tree. Decorations? Not so much (but I just moved in 3 months previous).
11. Snow! Love it or dread it? LOVE it! Miss snowmobiles, ice fishing, skating on the pond... don't miss the grey slush that takes over in February, though.
12. Can you ice skate? Yes, but I'm no longer good at it. My ankles wobble too much. Then again, rental skates are teh ebil and don't help much on that front.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? When I got older (11 or so), I wanted & got roller skates. I also got a Barbie I wanted when I was 7 or so, but I accidentally peeked in the bag when shopping with Mom--no, it really was an accident!--and my Christmas was ruined because I knew that one present.
14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you? I agree with
dancewench: Family... in every sense of the word.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Um, yes? I loved the cookies from our neighborhood cookie exchange when I lived in MI... especially the Norwegian neighbor's fried snowflakes covered in powdered sugar! Oh, and the church windows (colored marshmallows held together w/chocolate and sliced into cookies). Buckeyes, toffee, warm gingerbread... you name it!
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Again, I'm with Jack. I love the smells of the holidays... really, from Halloween to the end of the year, I'm very scent-oriented. I love spending all day baking with smarmy music blaring, or "Miracle on 34th Street" or "It's a Wonderful Life" playing in the background.
17. What tops your tree? A star with a Santa face... or it would, if I had been together enough to put my tree up yet.
18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? I think balance is healthy, but I prefer the giving just a bit more. Receiving means more when there's a pattern of thoughtfulness all year round.
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? Guilty pleasure time--The Carpenters (shut up,
middnightclear!). Anything sung by Nat King Cole. Or We Need a Little Christmas from "Mame." I also love Little Drummer Boy, but remember the Rankin Bass claymation where Nestor the long-eared donkey loses his mama and it makes me sad! However, I remember
hellocobweb singing David Bowie's "Peace on Earth" descant and it makes everything better. I also love the minor feel of O Come Emmanuel. It sounds like the mystery of the holiday (which appeals to me as much as the joy). Basque carols like Patapan (be kind to your cookware!) and Torches are also fun.
Why yes, I was a professional caroler for 14 years. Why do you ask?
20. Candy Canes: like them or don't like them? Meh. I'm not passionate about them either way.
21. Favorite Christmas movie? "Scrooged" or the version of the Christmas Carol with Albert Finney ("Thank you very much! It's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me!") Oh, and I always get misty when Linus does his speech in "A Charlie Brown Christmas." This gets kind of like foodie questions... my favorite is probably whatever I'm watching at the time.
