Team practice

Last night we went to River Legacy Park in Arlington. Yeah, practice outside in Texas. In August. Fortunately, we had several team matters such to discuss so we took our time strapping on equipment (heh) to let the sun go down a bit and hope for a little relief from the heat.
I was feeling more confident and jazzed since Sunday's qualifier. Ohhhh hubris. I've never skated outdoors. What a wake up call. I was almost in a flat-out panic before I even left the parking lot. Granted, it was much bumpier than the road or trails... but sheesh. I skated about 1/2 mile, hit another rough patch and freaked. Poor
katiebare witnessed the whole ugly scene. I skated to a patch of grass, fell down on my kneepads, unlaced my skates and walked back.
Maybe I'm a wussy, but I was so tense that my lower back was screaming. (Didn't help that Aunt Flo's arrival was imminent either.) I bent my knees more, tightened my abs and tried to focus on my stance but my nerves had me so tight that I was no good. Plus, I didn't see the sense in risking a stress-induced-stupid-mistake kind of injury two weeks before a bout.
Walked the track a lot instead to work on my aerobic conditioning. Did another 2.5 miles or so and I'm not in agony this morning. Can tell I worked - especially abs and quads - but my body isn't protesting. (Yes, this is me looking for silver linings in the little things.)
