Skate Update

sandmansisterToday was exponentially better. Seems I found my center and my body is remembering my rink rat days; I hardly jerked or flailed at all. (The head of the Executive Board watched me skate just one lap and congratulated me on my improvement - w00t!) My speed was a little better too, and I managed a few crossovers on my turns without tangling myself. Even did the backwards drills - first time I've been on quads to go backwards in, oh, 25 years. Meep!
Sparkle Plenty and Buckshot Betsy from the Texas Rollergirls came for the first hour of practice too. Sparkle was the Training Coordinator for the Austin league and they showed us some more stops and falls. Betsy went out of her way to give me some rah-rahs too (probably 'cuz my smart ass mouth was grousing to keep me distracted and make sure I didn't actually engage my emotions in an "Oh GAWD I'm old!" freak out).
Of course, the downside to all this is that I skated harder and am a bit more sore than last week... but I am having such fun with this. Derby combines playing dress up, rockin' music, bad-ass attitudes and aggression therapy with genuine athleticism. What's not to love?
